Chassidishe Maaseh
A farmer once got angry at his donkey and decided to throw him into a ditch. If that wasn’t enough, he proceeded to throw heaping dirt piles into the ditch to cover the donkey. Satisfied with his work, the farmer returned to his house but several hours later he was astonished to see the very donkey he’d punished walking towards him! Unbelieving, he turned to his donkey and asked “How in the world did you get here?” The donkey smiled and said, “ Thank you so much, Farmer– those piles you threw down were incredible. They made it possible for me to actually climb out!”
Question of the day
How did the donkey view the piles of dirt?

Once when the Alter Rebbe was farbrenging with his fellow students of the Mizritcher Maagid, he filled up his glass and said “L’chaim! May G-d help us with our physical and spiritual needs!” His friends looked at him in surprise. “Why did you request physical before spiritual blessings?” they asked. The Alter Rebbe said, “Our forefather Yaakov did the same thing, asking Hashem for gashmius before ruchnius.” His companions responded, “True but the physical of Yaakov Avinu, was on a much higher level then ours. How can you compare the two?”
Replied the Alter Rebbe, “And his Ruchnius can be likened to ours?"
In other words, even Yaakov, whose spirituality far exceeded his involvement in the physical world requested his physical needs before his spiritual concerns. So we too can ask the same thing.
Question of the day
What did the A”R say?
Quote of Day
A chasidishe thought clears ones mind and cleanses ones heart.
Hachlata of the day
Think about the Rebbe for a minute before you go to bed.
Point to Ponder
Seven years old and yet to speak. His parents would have been more worried if the doctors hadn't reassured them that their child seemed neurologically sound, and fit within all the expected parameters of normal development.
One day at breakfast he suddenly turned on his mother and complained, "Mom, this porridge is cold and the toast is burnt!"
Shocked, his mother responded, "If you can talk, why have you said nothing till now?"
"Till now everything has been fine."
How many act like the little chutzpanyak in the above story; never a word of gratitude until everything goes pear-shaped, and then, don't we just kvetch and moan. It's almost as if we expect and demand the good times keep rolling without any effort on our part, while we reserve the right to blame everyone else when the music stops.

A man once dreamt that he was standing in a big building full of people. Suddenly, the ground began to tremble. People panicked and began to run in all directions. The ceiling of the building seemed to be on the verge of collapsing at any moment. Then he saw the Rebbe standing in the room and he was holding the ceiling as if to prevent it from falling on the people in the building. When he woke up in the morning, he remembered his dream but he couldn't make heads or tails of it. That day, while Davening in Shul, his seat suddenly slipped 2 yards to the side. Who was pushing his chair? Looking around, he noticed that all the other chairs in the Shul had also moved! It seemed that an earthquake had just taken place– but miraculously, no one had been hurt! It was at that point that he began to understand his dream...and he realized that this miracle was in the Zchus of the Rebbe.

A Lubavitcher Chassid related: He used to put Tefillin on all the soldiers during the Yom Kippur War. Once, the Chassid told one of the soldiers that the next time he goes home, he should tell his wife that he performed the mitzvah of putting on Tefillin. The soldier agreed, but when he returned to the army base– he admitted that he had forgotten all about his promise. Disappointed at having let the Chossid down, the soldier gave his word that on his next visit home, he would tell his wife about the Mitzvah he’d been doing. This time, he did remember. When he returned to the army base, he immediately went to share the news his Lubavitcher friend. “I told her!” he said. “And she just smiled and anwered, ‘Ronen, we have been married for four years now, and this is the first time ever heard about you performing a good deed!’ ”

Reb Mendle Futerfas went on a train to do Mivtzah Tefillin. He went from passenger to passenger, asking them if they wished to lay Tefillin. Reb Mendel noticed an elderly man and suggested that he perform the mitzvah. The old man became very upset and began to scream at Reb Mendel.. After the first round of not nice compliments Reb Mendel turned to the man with a smile and replied “But I love you.” The man became even more enraged and went on screaming at Reb Mendel, cursing him out. With every eruption, however, Reb Mendel replied with a smile, “ But I love you.”. And eventually he put on Tefillin because of Reb Mendel’s earnest and heartfelt request.

The Chassidim used to occasionally steal manuscripts of Chassidus that the Rabbaim declined to make public. But on one of the manuscripts the Alter Rebbe wrote, “A Cherim in both this world and next world to anyone who violates the privacy of this manuscript”. Therefore no one dared to steal that one. One time a fire burnt down the whole house destroying everything. The Alter Rebbe was searching for “illegal” copies of his documents. When he searched for the document with the Cherim warning but didn’t find it, his son Reb DovBer said, “Didn’t you write that the punishment for stealing this document is cherim?” The Alter Rebbe replied, “What has become to mesiras nefesh for Torah?”

Chassidim once came to the Alter Rebbe and condemned someone in their community as a faker and a hypocrite. "He acts really holy," they said, "but inside he is really as coarse and unrefined as anything..." "Well," the Alter Rebbe responded," in that case, may he meet the end that the Talmud predicts for such people." And he explained- "The Talmud warns that one who pretends to be a pauper will eventually find himself stricken with poverty. So along the same lines, one who pretends to be righteous and pious will find that these traits will eventually really be ingrained in him."

A Lubavitcher Chassid in Soviet Russia had a son who became a radical Communist. Eventually his father sat “Shiva” for him and mourned the loss of his son. One day he decided to tell the local Communist party officials that his son belonged to a very religious family where all the members were opponents of the regime and against the revolution… this would certainly be a source for mockery and might stop his son from advancing to a higher position in the Communist party. Before putting his plan to action, he went to see the Rebbe Rayatz in order to ask for his consent. He told the Rebbe the whole story. When the Rayatz heard his suggestion, he became very upset. He stood up behind his writing desk, leaned against the table and cried out: WHAT??!! TO INFORM AGAINST A JEW??!!

The Rebbetzin
Below are some pictures of places, documents and events pertaining to the Rebbetzin's life. (courtesy of www.chabad.org)

The Rebbe and Rebbetzin resided in this home in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn, N.Y., beginning in the mid-1950s.

When her parents resided in Rostov-on-the-Don, the Rebbetzin met with her future husband in the town of Kislovodsk. She got engaged to the Rebbe before leaving Russia; the couple married in 1928 in Warsaw, Poland. In 1950, after the death of her father, the Rebbetzin convinced her husband to accept the mantle of leadership of Chabad-Lubavitch. Here is a copy of an invitation to the 1928 wedding.

The Rebbetzin accompanied her father during his exile from Leningrad to Kostroma, Russia, in 1927. Weeks earlier, the Russian secret police showed up to their home to arrest the Sixth Lubavitcher Rebbe. The Rebbetzin called out to her cousin and future husband, the Rebbe, “Schneerson! Guests have arrived.” The signal allowed the Rebbe to escape arrest, save priceless manuscripts belonging to the Lubavitch movement, and conduct clandestine efforts to commute his future father-in-law’s death sentence and eventually to secure his release. This passport was issued by the Russian government in the late 1920s.

When the Rebbetzin's father, the Sixth Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneersohn, of righteous memory, assumed leadership of Chabad-Lubavitch, he became the target of continuous threats by Russia’s Soviet authorities. With uncertainty hanging over him, he entrusted his middle daughter Chaya Mushka with the power to conduct all legal transactions on his behalf, as reflected in this document.

Rebbetzin Chaya Mushka Schneerson, of righteous memory, was born in Babinovitch, in present-day Belarus, in 1901. Upon her birth, her grandfather, the Fifth Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Sholom Dovber, wrote from abroad, “If she hasn’t been named yet, she should be called Chaya Mushka,” as shown in this letter that now resides in the library of Agudas Chasidei Chabad. In 1920, when the Rebbe was ill, his 19-year-old granddaughter cared for him.

One of the Chassidim of Reb Zushe of Anipoli once came to visit his Rebbe. Soon after he arrived, he learned that Reb Zushe had left town to visit with his own Rebbe, the Mezritcher Maggid and when the Chossid heard this, he thought: If Hashem has given me so much Brocho in my Parnassa until now,as a chossid of Reb Zushes, then if I become a Chossid of my Rebbe’s Rebbe I will surely hit the Jackpot! And so he traveled to Mezritch. Within a few months all his business ventures had failed and this man lost all of his money. Broken, he returned to Reb Zushe and cried-“I understand this is my punishment for deserting you, but what was wrong with my calculation?” Reb Zushe answered- "Till now, when you gave charity without assessing the worthiness of the recipient, G‑d responded by looking after you, wether you truly deserved it or not. Once you started analyzing where you could get the best value for your money, G‑d had a good look at how deserving you are, and you obviously came up short."

The children of Rabbi Vogel of Manchester were afflicted with chronic asthma. After trying many doctors they decided to go to the Rebbe who directed them to Dr. Sinclair. The family arrived at the Drs. office while he was busy with another patient so the Dr. told the father that the children can play in the yard until he was free. All of the sudden the children ran in and the Dr. was shocked to see that they were all in the midst of an asthma attack! After he treated them he asked them where they had been playing, and they pointed to a bush. He then asked the parents if they had such a bush at home, and they answered in the affirmative. He advised them to uproot the bush. Perhaps the children were allergic to it. The parents followed the advice and the attacks stopped! The Dr. later said, How did the Rebbe know to send them to me? How did it happen that just when they came I was busy? And how did it happen that in my spacious garden they chose to play next to that specific bush? If this isn't a miracle then what is it!?
Question of Day
Why were the children getting these asthma attacks?

Ask the wise men of many cultures, and they will tell you that all is temporal, all will pass, there is nothing in this world to cling to, only to transcend.
Ask a sage of the Torah and he will tell you it is not true. The vanities of time, the failures of life, they all pass as clouds on a windy day, but truth lives forever.
This is the meaning of the thirteenth of the thirteen principles of our faith, the belief that those who lived true lives will live again, in a real and corporeal way. It is a rejection of temporalism, a confirmation that there are things in the world that really matter, that have endless meaning and absolute purpose.
Whenever a G-dly act is performed, all involved are elevated beyond time. Save a life--you are Noah saving the entire world. Feed weary travelers--they are the angels coming to visit Abraham and Sarah. And Abraham and Sarah are hosting them with you.
In fact, all those who had truth in their lives are here with us today. It is only that we are so much a part of this river of time, we cannot lift our heads to see above it.
Only when the falseness of the world will be ripped away and all is elevated to a place of truth, then we shall all see each other, together once again.

Once, when the Tzemach Tzedek was a small boy, his grandfather, the Alter Rebbe, held him in an embrace. Sitting contentedly on his grandfather’s lap, the little boy caressed his beard and said, “Zaide, Zaide.” “This is certainly the Zaide’s beard but where is the Zaide?”, The Alter Rebbe asked. The Tzemach Tzedek pointed to his grandfather’s eyes and then to other places on his body, but got a similar response each time. Suddenly without explanation, the Tzemach Tzedek climbed down from his grandfather’s lap and hid himself behind the door to the room. After a moment he cried out from his hiding spot, “Zaide! Zaide! ”. The Alter Rebbe turned in the boy’s direction and asked “what is it?” “Aha!” said the T”T. “Here is the Zaide!”(When a person answers to being called by name, he respods with his whole essence)

The Rebbe Rashab was once at a gathering of Chassidim when the time to daven mincha arrived. At that moment, the host had been about to serve tea to his guest. A controversy ensued over what to do first; daven mincha, or to serve the tea? “It all depends on what you want to do in a less hurried and peaceful manner”, remarked the Rebbe. “If you’d rather drink the tea in a leisurely fashion, then by all means, daven mincha first. If, however, you’d prefer to daven with a clear head, its better to get the tea drinking over with. The Rebbe Rashab drank his tea and then went to daven Mincha.
Question of the Day
What did the Rebbe Rashab choose to do first?

In the middle of a Fabrengen, a chossid turned to the men sitting beside to him and asked them to bentch him. The Chassidim disregarded his request with the excuse that they weren't worthy of giving such brachos, and continued on fabrenging. The Alter Rebbe saw this scene take place and banged on the table for everyone's attention and then he said, “Chassidim, you don't understand the power of a fabrengen. When Hashem sees his children sitting here be’achdus, Farbreging together, he gets so much nachas that he reciprocates the love that you have amongst yourselves with even more love and chesed, pouring down unlimited brachos. Therefore what a chassidishe farbrengen can accomplish, even the merciful Malach Michoel can’t accomplish. So don't underestimate the power of your brochos during a Farbengen.

There was once a young man who wanted, more then anything in the world, to leave Russia for the United States. His father would not let him go. Together, they decided to go and visit the Rebbe Rashab. Much to the son's disappointment, the Rebbe sided with his father and expressed his opposition to the plan. Nevertheless, the son paid no attention to the Rebbe's words and set off for the United States. During the ocean voyage, the ship sank, leaving no survivers. The broken-hearted father went to the Rebbe and asked, "Why didn't you warn my son of what would happen?" he asked. "if you would have only told him what was in store for him, he would've never left.!" "Believe me," answered the Rebbe, "I had no idea what was going happened to the ship, all that was revealed to me was that your son did not belong on the ship.”
